i would say at least 80 percent of my bites have come in open water. if you’re only targeting cover with your frog, you are missing the boat. You want to fish the frog any place that you would fish a Zara Spook or popper. Guys tend to think it is solely a summertime bait and that it needs to be 105-degrees out to be effective. Well, that is just not so. it can be just as effective in those 60-degree springtime days, especially when the spawners are biting. You can even use the frog as a locating tool; because if you’re blind casting to bedding areas and those spawners blow up, but don’t hook up – they’ve just given themselves away to you and now you know where to troll over and get ‘em.

i also think guys give up way too soon on it. The frog can be fished all the way into late fall. Think of all of those october tournaments won on the delta and Clear lake with the frog – all of those toC’s and year-end events.
