Spring 2025

I

t is no secret among anglers across the world, there

is a dream. The dream to catch the biggest fish ever.

We grew up hearing “fish stories” of the one that got away. Or tales of giants seen lurking beneath the water’s

surface. Each day and with every cast we imagine leaving

our footprint in the record books – making history and being

talked about long after our fishing days are done. But, on

each day and each cast are we giving ourselves that chance

at greatness? Are we trying to hit home runs on every swing

or just trying to make contact?

These are valid questions; we must ask ourselves to achieve a history-worthy level of success and then we need to ask – what are the things we can do to reach this legendary status?

These approaches and this mentality are not for everyone. However, as you gain angling experience with time on the water, it becomes a more desirable goal. So, if you have not had these dreams, keep fishing your time will come. If you have had these dreams, here are some factors that deserve to be analyzed.

LUCKY OR GOOD?

“Fishing is all luck, he or she just got

lucky being at the right place at the right

time.” We’ve all heard these lines

time and time again about

tournament anglers and

trophy hunters.

These statements

prove true under certain circumstances, but when it continues to happen on a regular basis, there is a little bit more than luck involved. The key factor is when your good fortune (luck) becomes predictable.

This alignment is based upon knowledge. The idea is to study so hard as a student that you will be able to graduate to become a teacher. The best time to cross paths with the largest fish is during the fall, winter, and spring.

During these months these large fish can be found near shallow water. They are either feeding or getting prepared for the spawn. The amount of written literature, videos, and podcasts available is abundant. Absorb information, apply, and adapt.

Another factor that is easier learned than taught is mindset.

HUNTING FOR A UNICORN

I often tell my clients “We are looking for unicorns.” Seeing a fish of this magnitude is a feat of its own. But “we are trying to give you the chance to ride a unicorn”?

Well, that is a once in a lifetime opportunity – when you are searching for unicorns – you cannot become frustrated when you do not find one. You just must keep looking.

These majestic creatures are extremely rare. They are a very small percentage of the fish population and if we saw them every day, they would not be that special.

A large swimbait can be used to draw them out and show themselves. Once located, catching comes down to getting the timing right and having favorable conditions.
