Barrack explained that the fish clue him into that need for increased speed.

“You will know it, when you notice an increase in activity,” he explained. “When they’re in active feeding mode. You can see it when you are fishing your regular slow speed and then you think you’re going to recast, so you quick reel it in and have one jump at your frog, or you see a few chase it in when you’re quick reeling it in after your retrieve. That happens a couple of times, and that’s a clue they’re feeding, and they want it faster. That doesn’t happen very often; but when it does, pay attention.”

PROFILE MODS

Typically, Barrack remains with the same size and colors of frog through most of the year.

“The only time I change the profile at all is in November or December,” he said. “I cut the number

of strands of skirting down to six or so. I eliminate 80 percent of the skirt to change the silhouette of the frog and leave the body intact. I only do this as the water temperature is dropping.”

GEAR CHANGES

Barrack’s must-have frog gear is: • Fins Infinity and Fins Pitch Black Braid • Snag Proof Bobby’s Perfect Frog by American Baitworks Co. • Bobby’s Perfect Frog Rod Quercus line (solid cork handle) by IROD

Barrack’s rod and reel doesn’t change through the stages of the season; however, his line does.

“I use 65-pound braid, for about 70 percent of my frog fishing,” he said. “Because it’s open water, its vegetation, and I can cast a little further and the 65 comes off the spool a little cleaner. But, when I am fishing under trees and heavy cover, heavy vegetation, heavy wood, I know that I am going to stress the braid, so I go to 80-pound in those situations.”
