PREPARE THE BEST
YOU CAN
Quizon starts his pre-fish by studying maps looking
for ledges, contour lines, vegetation, and spawning flats. He
focuses on areas that he will be able to travel to during the
tournament day. He wraps up his prep with an in-depth
check of his equipment to include his vehicle.
“Checklists are very important to make sure that you don’t
miss anything,” he added. “Time management is also key.”
Ensign reported that due to work and family
commitments he does not get much time to pre-fish.
He tries to get on the water the day before to check on
conditions and form a game plan.
“I do some map study to get myself acquainted with the
body of water,” he revealed. “All I really think about is how to
figure out what the fish are doing and how to get them to eat.”
GAMEDAY FOCUS
It’s tournament day. Let the competition begin. Quizon likes to focus on a quick limit. “Once I have the limit, I can relax and then focus on culling up,” he explained. “It doesn’t matter the size of the limit, I just get a limit. Quizon feels Adaptability is his strong point and remaining flexible is a necessary component to gameday focus.
“Things are not always going to happen the way they did in pre-fishing,” said Quizon.
A focused, positive, calm demeaner is also important to Ensign. “I’ve fished so many tournaments in the past few years and I still get nervous,” he remarked. “I just go in there with an open mind and try to figure them out.
“Prepare to be humbled and be OK with it. Just seeing the sun come up in the morning while out on the water is a win for me. Catching a fish is a bonus.” •
