“The other thing about this hook is it has a corkscrew-type keeper and really holds the bait straight,” he added. “It also helps so your bait doesn’t tear up as much. While he often uses this setup for skipping under docks, he will also fish it around flooded brush, around submerged grass, and near pilings.
One normally associates football head jigs with just that – jigs. VanDam shared that one of his favorite uses for light football heads is for rigging small swimbaits.
“The football shape balances a swimbait just right and allows you to get that slow swimming action,” he said. “It is mainly a clear water finesse technique for me with light fluorocarbon.”
Typically, he will use the Mustad Elite Series Football Heads (FH898) in 3/16, 1/4 and 3/8-ounce
“I adjust the head size to control the depth, but any of the 3/8-ounce and smaller heads are perfect for a 3.75” Strike King Rage Swimmer,” he added.
One of the biggest issues with some swimbaits is missed fish. To counter this, he adds a stinger hook.
