too, and guess what; he catches as many fish on that Alabama reservoir on underspins as he does the other. He simply modifies his technique.

The forage and caliber of fish in Guntersville is a bit larger than that in Lewis Smith, so Hawk adjusts by beefing up his presentation. That may mean not cutting down his D Shad trailer, or switching to a Yamamoto Swimbait as a trailer, as the boot-tail also adds extra vibration for the stained water.

The Swimbait trailer is actually Hawk’s go-to for the majority of the year, because for the majority of the year, he uses an underspin like most use regular swimbaits. After all, they’re basically the same thing with one key difference.

“There are days when they want a swimbait on a regular lead jighead, but there are plenty more days when they want the extra flash of the underspin,” says Hawk.

Because Hawk uses underspins out on the ledges in summer, he and Picasso designed 3/4-, 1- and 2-oz versions of the Double Barrel Underspin. This allows him to get down to any ledge with even the beefiest of trailers – Hawk likes the 5-inch Yamamoto Swimbait trailer or even the Keitech Swing Impact 5.8 when fishing in the summer. He’ll bomb the lure out there, let it sink to the bottom and then start a slow retrieve.

“The Double Barrel Underspin has those two arms that actually help it deflect off cover and the bottom, which is perfect for ledge fishing,” says Hawk. “Plus, the blades also kick up sediment as well as add vibration.”

As for colors, Hawk keeps it simple, going with some variation of white to always imitate a shad. You might even say he’s pigeon-holed the underspin into only being a shad imitator. Then again, that’s the beauty of the lure. It catches fish regardless of how often, when or where you throw it.
