to tell a story. It gives me a great appreciation for a Bassmaster or Major League Fishing show that fits an event that’s six days long into two hours.”
Filming is time-consuming.
The shoots go from sunrise to sundown, and once the sun dips below the horizon, you’re done. “If they don’t have enough fish by three or four o’clock, that’s tough luck,” added Bobbi. “We need the rest of the day to grab b-roll and exit interviews.” Usually, those long days are followed by long drives through the night to the next filming or tournament location, with Leogrande and Crivelli cramming in editing hours in the back seat.
Filming can also be frustrating. Both Chapman’s swear the fish have a habit of getting camera shy, which has resulted in several episodes that show tough days on the water. “It’s fishing, not catching,” says Brent. “It’s real.”
But beyond fishing or—if you’re lucky—catching, Chapman says it’s important to be yourself, be unique and enjoy the hard work. “If somebody is
looking to be the next Jimmy Houston or Rolland Martin or Bill Dance,” he says, “They’ve got to remember it’s a business. Those guys are geniuses at what they do. I know I’m not Gerald Swindle, for instance. But I know you’ve got to own your personality.”
Back at Lake Apache, the dusty bass boat is finally in its element. Brent and his “Joe”, Arizona’s Tracy Alcina, are filming with Crivelli. A few fish are in the boat, and finally, filming is going according to plan— almost. On the other side of the lake, Bobbi Chapman finds herself rocketing across the water in another boat with Leogrande at the helm. Their $4,000 drone is quickly dropping out of the sky and into a watery tomb. Barely, in the very last nick of time, they come off plane and find the drone crashing to the deck— several grand saved by quick thinking.
“When you get the cameras rolling,” Brent concludes. “It seems like little things start happening that you’ve got to be prepared for.” In fact, it seems that a lot of things change when you get the cameras rolling.”
