FALL PICK #2: STRIPER BITE
A key to the Delta’s fall striper bite can come from the Bay. As we’ve learned from fishing guide Vince Borges, if they’re catching ‘em in the Bay, more on the way into the Delta system. One of Borges’ preferred ways to catch them is by trolling. He likes maneuver along the grass lines at just under 2 MPH and has two baits of choices for the presentation. Both come from Yo-Zuri, and both are versions of their Crystal Minnow. He likes a shallow and a deep option of the plug. He uses the shallow minnow in water that’s 10-feet or less. Borges recommends tying to Yo-Zuri T7 fluorocarbon in 15- to 17-pound-test. He will also marry a braid to the fluoro at times.
TIP: To bulk up the Minnow’s profile and enhance the action, Borges stretches the silhouette with a Zoom Trick Worm.
When in search of a bigger striper, Borges turns to the flats and a topwater or glidebait, tying up a Duel Hardcore Twitch’N Ninja Glider on the same Yo-Zuri T7, opting for 20-pound- test or a Yo-Zuri 3DB Pencil Popper.
Tip: Use bright, loud, gaudy colors like Clown to attract a striper’s attention and always beef up split rings and hooks to combat the strength of the bigs.
STOCK UP: Fisherman’s Warehouse stocks several different versions of the Crystal Minnow including the 5 1/4-inch Floating, 3D Deep Diver in lengths of 5 1/4- and 6-inch, the 3D Magnum in 6 1/2-inch, 3D Shallow in 5 1/4- inch, and the 5 1/4-inch Jointed. They also have a newer version of the 5 1/4-inch Yo-Zuri Crystal Minnow Deep Diver, the Premium Classic to reflect all subsurface light at max speeds with a tight wiggle action. Clown as well as Red Head and Fluorescent Pink are some of the options. *Remember the trailer.
