Fall 2023
®
On grass lakes, I look for an area with healthy vegetation and bait, both are required for me. It can be the healthiest grass on the entire lake but without the presence of bait, large schools of bass may not be present.
WB: What recommendations with regards to a tough fishery would you suggest to your fellow kayak anglers on how to help quickly locate bass in the fall?
URIBE: If I go to a body of water I never fished before then I usually YouTube a few videos on that lake around the time of the tournament to get an idea of lures to use and where the fish are located. Then I go on Google Earth to look at the whole lake and see if there are other areas that may have similar structures that may be holding the fish. For example: tules, docks, rocky points and grass flats. Lastly, I mark those areas on my graph or phone so I can put my research to the test once I arrive on the lake. If all else fails, fish your confident lures

and stick with it, sometimes patience
is key to get those
winning bites.
LEE: On tough
fisheries, I approach
with map study. I
check areas where
the bass will spend
their winter and
then work my way
into the pre-spawn
areas. There will be
shallow fish, but I
think of the process
as the ultimate goal
to reach wintering
areas. Do not be
afraid to check the
same areas during
different times of
the day. The schools
like to roam and
generally do not sit
in one place like the
dead of summer.
Choose the launch
ramps that have
multiple different
contour features
nearby. I look for
areas where the fish
are feeding instead
of looking for a pattern.
Two different views from two very experienced kayak
anglers about how to find fall time bass. One thing for
sure, fishing can be extremely tough or very rewarding
with 100 fish days. Try these techniques on your next
outing during the fall, they are proven fish catching
techniques. Good luck! •
