I

t was the mid to late ‘80s when frog fishing all started, for

me. I was throwin’ a Bill Plummer Super Frog, a Mann’s

Rat and occasionally a Snag Proof Frog. The heaviest one – the Super Frog always worked out the best.

In the beginning, I used 14-pound yellow Stren and moved

through 20-pound Big Game, 20-pound Maxima, 25-pound Big

Game and 25-pound Maxima – until mid-1993. I will talk more

about that later.

Back when it all started, it was standard to land only one or

two bites out of 10 on a frog. It is just how it was.

It sounds crazy now; but when I started, I was using a rod

that was comparable to a spinnerbait rod. It was an Abu Garcia

5’6 pistol grip rod.

Later, Shimano came out with the 7-foot Boron rod. But that

was a little pricey and the only time I threw my frog with it was

when I borrowed it from my buddy Shane.

DELTA GIANTS

I grew up fishing the south part of the Delta. There were a couple sections down there that had moss most of the time after May – especially Twin Skulls.

It was a very intriguing time in fishing and if I knew then, what I know now – well – WOW!The fish down there were in that two to six-pound range, but at the time – with my age –
