“You want a plastics option that is flat and matches up with the head design,” Faircloth explained. “This will help you skip your bait further. A trailer like a swimbait will fight the skipping action all the way as it will have a tendency to grab water as it goes slowing your jig down”.

SLITHER RIG

When it comes to fishing in heavy cover Todd uses a Slither Rig instead of a heavy cover jig. There are a few reasons for this.

“One of the biggest reasons is that I can get it through the thicker weeds better than I can a jig,” he shared. “And, the biggest plus is the hookup ratio. With the Slither Rig I feel I get a better hookup ratio when fishing in heavy cover than I do with other jigs.”

Faircloth will match the Slither Rig to the forage the same as if he were any jig.

“I will pair my Slither Rig with a 3/0 Gamakatsu Heavy Flipping hook and the needed Strike King plastic option of my choice to match the forage that I am trying to imitate,” he added. “I fish this presentation on Sunline FX2 50-pound braid to match the heavy cover conditions.”

Here are many years of tournament experience that Faircloth has shared with us in helping lay the groundwork of how he rigs and fishes his favorite jigs to match the fishing conditions with success. It should help you put more fish in your boat. •
