White colored baits are great choices for shad-eating bass, but Hackney also uses other colors for his topwater fishing.
“It seems like chrome is always a good color in the fall, especially early in the morning or when you have some dirtier water,” he added. “I usually switch to a more translucent color on my hard baits later in the day, when the sun is shining bright.”
Fishing a topwater is Hackney’s preferred way to fish for shallow fall bass. He fishes his walking baits on a 6’10” Quantum KVD jerkbait rod with a high-speed Quantum reel.
“What I like about that rod is that it has a really short handle and you can work the bait and it won’t hit my forearm,” he said. “It makes it easier to work the bait faster and
