I

n this issue of WesternBass, I would like to

try to give my take on the complexity of the

evolution of a weekend bass fisherman to a

successful tournament angler. This may not sit real well with everyone, but I’m

writing this article to help fishermen reach their goals

in this magnificent sport.

There are many different ways to get to your

goals, but here is where you get to read my “opinion”

based on my experiences and some of what

to expect as you travel down this road.

SUCCESS CAN BE FLEETING

I get asked questions like, “How can I be a sponsored tournament fisherman?” or “How can I be a successful tournament angler?”

There are many different routes to success, none of which are wrong as long as you treat everyone with respect and go about achieving

64

your goals with integrity. You

just need to find the way, which is

right for you.

We all have different attributes,

likes and dislikes and have specific God

given skills and talents. Being honest

with yourself, figuring out what you do

best and then expanding your “comfort

zone” to do some of the tasks necessary that you may not do best is probably the aspect of this journey that holds people back from fully

achieving all professional bass fisherman has

to offer.

Just because you can catch big bass

on your home lake on the weekend

does not really qualify you to jump into

tournaments in which you will be

fishing when the schedule says

you will fish a certain lake at

a certain time, no matter

what the weather is. And

oh, by the way, there are

going to be a lot of other

guys fishing that same lake at

the same time trying to catch

the same bass you are!
