Fluorocarbon, although if he’s using a light lure and wants to get it down deep he’ll drop to 10 or 12.

Reehm likes a Dobyns 705CB for the same reasons DeFoe makes his rod choice, and he also uses 15 lb. test fluorocarbon (Seaguar Invis-X), although if he’s fishing around a lot of grass he’ll go up to 40 lb. test Seaguar Smackdown braid on a Dobyns 706CB.

One area where they differ is on the choice of reel. DeFoe prefers a Pflueger Supreme with a 6.4:1 gear ration, the same reel he uses “for almost all crankbait, except for deep cranking.” Reehm, on the other hand, likes a high- speed reel “to keep the bait up in the water column,” and lately he finds himself reaching most frequently for a Daiwa Tatula Type-HD with a 7.3:1 gear ratio.

They agree, however , that despite the emergence of new tactics and categories every year -- some of them flashes in the pan and others here to stay – they’ve yet to find anything that covers water so efficiently as a lipless crankbait. Not new, not hard to learn, but effective in the fall year after year after year.
