swimbait heads are deep-water, must-haves for smallmouth fishing.

SOFT PLASTIC “SWIMMERS”

Keitech baits are king in this category and any of the sizes from 2.8 to 5.8 inches of the Keitech Swing Impact FAT are excellent choices for smallmouth. These baits, along with Reaction Innovations Little Dippers are the baits I use most for smallmouth swimbaiting.

GLIDE BAITS

Glide baits are another category of swimbaits that have exploded in popularity recently and the smallmouth love them as much as we bass anglers do. The “S” action

attracts smallmouth from a great distance and I have witnessed schools following it in ultra-clear water. My favorite baits are the River2Sea S-Waver 120 and 168 in trout and perch patterns.

WHEN AND WHERE

Like swimbaits for largemouth, there are times and seasons that are better for throwing swimmers for smallmouth. Early in the season and again late in the year are the times when I will reach for the

Huddleston as the

trout and kokanee

are most active

and often recently

stocked into the

lakes I fish.

As the water

warms, I start

to use the glide

baits and Keitech

style baits
