WHEN TO SPIN

Scroggins is quick to laud the spinnerbait’s

versatility, but again, today’s tackle bag holds a lot of

great options, of which the wire armed bait is but one.

That being said, he knows there are times when this

bait is simply the best option.

Generally speaking, that means windy conditions.

Very often, the nastiest conditions can yield the

best spinnerbait opportunities, as wind stirring the

shallows pumps up the oxygen levels, confuses

baitfish and puts bass in the food mood.

“When it’s hard to control your boat, think about

picking up a spinnerbait,” Scroggins said. “Cloud cover

is another good thing to have when you’re throwing

a spinnerbait. Fish tend to roam around more and you

can fish the bait faster.”

As Scroggins said, a spinnerbait will certainly

produce fish during pleasant, sunny conditions, as

long as he has some wind to break up the surface.

Similarly, daybreak often brings a shallow spinnerbait

bite in clear water, but a little color in the water always

helps.

CUTTING EDGE

Blade-friendly scenarios are many, but Scroggins shared a couple of his faves.

SHAD SPAWN: “During May and June,

a spinnerbait is the No. 1 bait- for the shad

spawn,” Scroggins said. “This is an early

morning, low light deal and you usually have

about three hours each morning before the sun gets too hot and the shad down back down. Shad relate to anything hard like marina docks, rip rap and sea walls. They’ll even relate to vegetation like lily pad stems.”

For this scenario, Scroggins throws a ½-ounce Booyah double willow leaf spinnerbait, because he can burn it through the area to entice shad-focused bass. Feeling his bait actually bumping shad tells him he’s in the right area.

Scroggins fishes a double willow leaf Booyah spinnerbait on a 6-foot, 10-inch Duckett White Ice Terry Scroggins signature series rod with a 6.3:1 Lew’s reel and 15-pound Hi-Seas fluorocarbon. This rod’s a
