Most anglers spend way too much time digging

through their line once an over spin occurs , hitting

that inevitable snag. Many times, the initial and frantic

digging and picking makes the situation worse. When

the over spin first happens, again use your thumb

to put resistance on your reel as you begin pulling

off the line. That snag is caused by one of the line

loops getting so big, it grabs the line heading to the

first guide and loops around it. if you just pull off line

with no resistance, it will get worse. if you do indeed

hit that snag, the ease of this trick i learned from Bill

dance will amaze you.

Before you even begin to start digging, tighten

your drag star as tight as possible. Then place your

free thumb on the line spool at such an angle that

your thumb nail is tight against the line. See photo #3.

turn the reel handle several rotations digging your

thumb nail into the line. Then engage the casting

button and slowly pull the line off the reel until you

again hit the snag or the line comes free. You may

have to repeat this process 3-5 times to free up that

looped snag. Your nail digs in and grabs that loop,

rotating it back around the spool, freeing up the snag

and loop. it’s too simple and amazing how this works.

Many of my clients have claimed this li l trick to be

“worth the price of admission” when on a trip with

me. “That trick alone Cooch, will save me countless

hours of hassles on the water.”

if for some reason this does not resolve the snag,

don’t waste any more time, grab your scissors or

clippers and cut that line right there below the line

guide at the snag, then repeat the process. More

often than not, you can recover from the snag, retie

and be able to quickly continue fishing.

Reel over spins are a daily nuisance to bass fishermen. I have learned as with many things in life, if you perfect patience and follow my three steps above, reel over spins are only as bad as you make them to be. I guess this piece should have been titled, The 5 Ps of Over spins, Perfect, Patience, Prepare, Prevent and Prevail.

Keep a tight line!
