Today’s SONAR and GPS navigation units have so many new, cool features, the technology is amazing. We can now see and interpret images below our boat much more clearly; mark and return to their locations much more accurately than ever before. That is, if, we know how to set them up properly and learn how to control the features that apply best to our particular fishing situation. There lies the challenge. For many anglers, that can be a big IF!
Hi. ThisisJeffBoyer, threetimeBassmaster Classic qualifier, educator, and co-owner of Sonar GPS WorkshopsLLC. Togetherwithmypartner,CaptainJack Findleton, we formed a company focused on the sole intention of helping anglers understand and operate their SONAR and GPS units to a level that tailors the unit’s featurestotheirparticularfishingapplication. Noneof ususeeveryfeatureintheunit. Butitisimportantto understand what features are available, then learn how to best use those that will maximize our success for our watersandspecies. Thisiswhatweareabout.
With collectively over 50 years of working closely with Lowrance, and thousands of on-the-water hours operating units, Jack and I have spent the last 6 years traveling the nation designing and presenting SONAR/GPS seminars. We’ve trained thousands of anglers just like you through interactive, hands- on instruction on how to get the most out of their units. You may very well have sat in on one of our workshops at a local sport show. That’s why we are so excited to have this opportunity to bring you SONAR and GPS education through WesternBass. com’s new online and interactive magazine.
In coming issues, we intend to answer a selection of questions you submit in the “Ask The Sonar Guys” feature. Therealsoisa“DidYouKnow”featurethat will cover a specific function or operation of interest.
Information will always pertain to Lowrance units, but for non-Lowrance owners, keep in mind the concepts presentedcanoftenbeappliedtootherbrands. In addition to the information presented here, you can also go directly to our company website, sonargpstraining. com,formorehow-toinstructionalmaterial. ADVDis available there now. Ask The sonAr Guys
Welcome to “Ask the Sonar Guys”. Let’s kick this feature off with a question I’ve heard frequently during our Lowrance Learning Center seminars this season: “With the superior imaging detail of StructureScan, why do I even need traditional sonar anymore?”
Take a look at the cone angles of the StructureScan transducer and a traditional sonar transducer and you’ll haveyouranswer. Foryearswe’veknownthecone angle pattern of a traditional sonar transducer is a circle. Similar to a flashlight beam, the diameter of the circle increases the further the distance from the transducer. A StructureScan transducer has the unique ability to shoot sound pulses far to the left and right, as well as underneath your boat, and provide incredibly detailed
