WESTERN BASS FISHING

By Rich Holland

A RECORD CATCH , A WINNING COMMENT and THREE MEN SHAPE

Montana rancher, an Arkansas farmer and a native Southern Californian would come together to bring the Western bass fish- ing scene to the height of its glory during the Silver Eagle era of tournament fishing and the flashpoint was one the first of many record- breaking catches posted by legendary Western pro Mike Folkestad.

Harvey Naslund, Forrest L. Wood and Don Lee all took different paths to reach promi- nence in the bass fishing industry, but a single Clear Lake event linked them forever after. The story of Arkansas bass-boat builder Forrest Wood has been well chronicled

through the years and how he literally rescued his fledgling Ranger Boats business from the flames by grabbing 60 boat orders out of a desk drawer while his first plant burnt to the ground in 1971. A year later Ranger was named the of- ficial boat of the Bassmaster Classic.
