Fly-Fishing Activities

ISE’s Fly Fishing Program Showcases Local and National Experts, Major Factories, Retailers and Learning Opportunities at the Fly-Tying How-To Center, during new Entomology clinics with Robert “The Bug Guy” Younghanz, a casting pond, outside Spey Pond, weekend NCCFFF Learning Center, and the Fly Fishing Theater, sponsored by Fly Tying Specialties.

GREAT FLY FISHING WITHIN 1 HOUR OF SACRAMENTO presents daily seminars by local guides Mark Pinto and Ron Speroni , hosted by retailers American Fly Fishing and Fly Fishing Specialties. The premise? We have less time to fish these days. Or, we don’t have as much money to travel...yet. Or, we don’t think there is great fishing close to home. These special talks are for beginners to experts.

BRIAN O’KEEFE makes a welcome return to ISE’s stage. Though he doesn’t act or look it, Brian is one of the industry’s grand ol’ men, known as much for his iconic photos as his stories about do-it-yourself fly fishing pretty much wherever there are waters and fish. Of late Brian has launched Catch Magazine .

PAT VERMILLION has spent the last 20 years guiding fly anglers in remote destinations around the world and with his two brothers owns and operates Sweetwater Travel. From fishing mouse patterns for the world’s largest trout in Mongolia, to throwing poppers for the veracious Peacock Bass deep in the Amazon, Pat has been there.

DANIEL GALHARDO manages Bay-area-based Tenkara USA, which offers increasingly popular products for this traditional Japanese method of fly-fishing that only uses a rod, line and fly. For backcountry, small- or wooded-shoreline waters, Tenkara is a refreshing approach.

JEFF PUTNAM has hosted ISE’s Spey-casting program for several years, and now steps upon the stage, too. Putnam owns a fly-fishing school and is at the leading edge of using new technologies to teach the sport. His talk, Techniques that Catch Trout, will assist beginning and advanced anglers on reading water, approaching the lie, correct casts and presentations.

LANCE GRAY and his wife Kirsten started Saltwater Innovations in 1993 and Lance Gray & Company, a full-service outfitter, in ‘93. A signature tier for Solitude Fly Company, Gray

has been published in California Fly Fisher, Sierra Fisherman and North West Fly Fishing . His talk is “Steelheading the Valley Rivers.”

MIKE E. WIER’s most recent film, Cali Rush , covers the state’s diverse outdoor sports. Mikey also works with California Trout. He’ll talk about the Truckee on Friday, and present several short films on Saturday that cover the McCloud, Truckee, East Carson, Pit and Hat Creek.

JOHN SHERMAN ’s images have appeared in Field and Stream, Fly Fisherman, California Fly Fisher, North West and South West Fly Fishing, Fly Fishing in Saltwaters , and The Drake . He took photos for the book, Fly Fishing the Delta .

LANDON MAYER , one of America’s fast-rising trout experts, has written or been featured in several articles in national publications, produced DVDs, and written books, including Sight Fishing for Trout .

DENNY RICKARDS has fished and guided anglers on western trophy waters for three decades, taking cutthroats to 15 pounds, rainbows in excess of 16, and browns over 20. Rickards’ books and companion videos are the bibles for stillwater fly fishing.

CRAIG NIELSEN owns Shasta Trout. For nearly two decades he’s guided Hat Creek, Upper Sacramento, Pit and McCloud, Lower Sacramento and Klamath.
